Help: Rafter Tails

The rafter tail is the portion of the rafter that extends outside the roof span and forms the building's overhang.

There are two common methods of cutting the rafter tail, plumb cut and square cut. The Cut buttons on the data entry page allow you to select a Square or Plumb cut.

A square cut tail has the end of the rafter cut square to the top and bottom edges of the rafter. This type of cut is common with closed cornice where gutters are not going to be used.

Plumb cut tails have the end of the rafter cut at an angle that will leave the end of the rafter plumb when finished. This style is often seen with open cornice. This style makes the installation of gutters easier when closed cornice is used.

The calculator allows you to enter the length of the tail in one of two ways. Either enter the length of the tail as measured 'on pitch' may be entered, or by the width of the desired overhang.

To specify tail length, check the On pitch button and enter the desired tail length in the Length box. This length will be masured on the under side of the rafter tail, from the notch to the end of the tail.

To specify overhang, check the Overhang button and enter the desired overhang width in the Length box. You should subtract facia and sub-facia thickness from the the finished overhang width you want before entering the value into the calculator.

See the Length Dimension help page for information on how the length value is entered into the calculator.
